Abstract: Purpose: Histologically evaluate the effects of low frequency electrical stimulation in the treatment of Achilles tendon injuries in rats. Methods: Thirty-four rats underwent Achilles tendon tenotomy and tenorrhaphy. They were randomly allocated in two groups. Half of the sample constituted the experiment group, whose lesions were stimulated with 2 Hz, nonpolarized current and 1 mA, for 14 days. The other animals formed the control group. They were evaluated at 2, 4 and… Show more

“…An ex vivo study on the human wound with both monophasic and biphasic ES of the field strength of 100 mV/mm for 30 min daily for 16 days accelerated the granulation tissue ingrowth into the wound centre. A significantly greater staining of cytokeratin-10 in the immunohistochemical analysis and approximately three times higher cytokeratin-10 mRNA expression compared to control at day 16 with double the epidermal thickness was observed [50]. In this ex vivo wound model, ES was found to significantly upregulate PCNA, HDM2, and SIVA1 expression in the stratum basale of epidermis at day 16 of treatment compared to the control.…”

“…Hence, combined or alternative analgesic strategies including acupuncture are often used to alleviate pain after tissue damage. Acupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years, and the clinical effect of acupuncture or electroacupuncture stimulation on the inhibition of persistent pain such as inflammatory pain, neuropathic pain, visceral pain, and cancer-related pain has been supported by relevant scientific evidence [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. In addition to pain-relief, both human and animal studies have confirmed the definite effect of electroacupuncture on movement disorders, and tissue regeneration, among others [ 17 , 18 , 19 ].…”

“…According to previous studies, electrical stimulation, combined magnetic fields and exercise therapy have been shown to have a beneficial effect on tendon bone healing. In an experiment on lowfrequency electrical stimulation after Achilles tendon resection and suturing in rats, it was observed histologically that collagen 1 and 3 were higher in the group receiving electrical stimulation than in the control group, so low-frequency electrical stimulation could promote collagen expression and increase the amount of collagen (Casagrande et al, 2021) Figure 2D, so it was further suggested that low-frequency electrical stimulation could promote tendon bone healing by promoting collagen expression. It has been shown that electrical stimulation can promote tissue regeneration by promoting cell proliferation and extracellular matrix production, cytokine secretion and vascular development (Ferrigno et al, 2020).…”
