Vitamin A supplementation reduces the Th17-Treg – Related cytokines in obese and non-obese women

Abstract: Objective: The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of vitamin A supplementation on serum Th17 (IL-6, IL-17, IFNγ) and Treg (TGF-β, IL-10) related cytokines in obese and non-obese women. Subjects and methods: In a randomized double blind placebo controlled design, 56 obese women were randomly assigned to receive either an oral dose of 25,000 IU retinyl palmitate or placebo per day for 4 months. Twenty eight ages matched non-obese women were also received vitamin A. At the study entry, a… Show more

“…Obesity as a worldwide epidemic challenge of 21st century (Burke et al, 2016) defined as an excess body fat accumulation leading to reduced life expectancy (El Sayed et al, 2012) and increased medical comorbidities such as cardiovascular events, type 2 diabetes mellitus, musculoskeletal disorders, gastrointestinal and respiratory problems and some types of cancers (Farhangi et al, 2016). World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the prevalence of obesity has doubled in the world since 1980 and more than 1.9 billion of adults were overweight in 2014 (Parimisetty et al, 2016).…”

“…Insulin as a vital brain signal plays important roles in neuronal proliferation, apoptosis, synaptic transmission, neuronal degeneration, memory and learning (Schubert et al, 2004). Recently, it has been shown that insulin receptors are numerously present in the hippocampus; as a substantial region for the synaptic plasticity (Farhangi et al, 2016; Kaiyala et al, 2000) and memory processing (Rodriguez‐Perdigon et al, 2016). This brain organ is vulnerable to the adverse consequences of HFD (high fat diet) (Sobesky et al, 2014) and alteration of glucose metabolism (Rodríguez et al, 2016).…”

“…Interestingly, serum IL17 is upregulated in obese human patients [ 103 ]. However, vitamin A supplementation diminishes serum levels of IL17 and transforming growth factor beta (TGF- β ) in premenopausal women [ 104 ]. Moreover, daily intake of vitamin A (25,000 IU/day) as retinyl palmitate increase circulating ATRA and 9- cis RA and reduce Th17 cells activity [ 105 ].…”
