Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between total and abdominal adiposity with metabolic parameters and inflammatory markers, in female adolescents. Subjects and methods: The sample consisted of 53 adolescents aged 13 to 17 years from a public school in Curitiba, Brazil. The adiposity indicators studied were body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), trunk fat mass (TKFM), total fat mass (TFM) and body fat percentage (BF%) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. “…6 However, that minimum threshold was determined by calculating an index of fat, which is less accurate than a body scan. 24,25 These studies differed from ours by having much lower BMI, indicating that the patients were further from their median BMI for age and sex. 8 Body composition in that study was determined by multifrequency bioelectric impedentiometry, which is also less accurate than using DXA scans.…”

“…21 However, in a couple of studies a smaller weight difference was associated with menstrual recovery. 24,25 These studies differed from ours by having much lower BMI, indicating that the patients were further from their median BMI for age and sex. The larger weight gain subsequently leads to the patient being closer to their median BMI, which is a positive predictor in the resumption of menses.…”

“…Body composition was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), using a Lunar TM Prodigy, according to the protocol previously described 24 . The analysis and quantification of bone mineral content and underlying tissues, total fat mass and fat free mass were performed using the enCore 2008 software, version 12.30.…”
