Impacts of land use and cover change on Paraíba do Sul whatershed streamflow using the SWAT model

Show more

“…This parameter shows the percentage of estimated data with 95% uncertainty such that the larger the P‐factor, the closer you get to the desired result. The second parameter is the “R‐factor,” which is a criterion for estimating the proximity between high and low bands used to evaluate the quality of modeling results 21 …”

“…Comparing this study area with the Guanabara Bay, the Gargaú mangrove region is less urbanized (± 530,000 inhabitants) and the mangroves occupy an area ten times smaller (± 8.0 km 2 ). As a result of the land use, deforestation, and several dams built along this river, the volume of water has decreased in recent decades, as well as the sediments export (ANDRADE; RIBEIRO, 2020). For most of the year, the secondary Paraíba do Sul estuary is homogeneous and shows a predominance of freshwater (MOLISANI et al, 1999).…”

“…Herein, we observed that the area with dense vegetation cover (TPC) displayed a negative correlation (-0.506) with the variables associated with the eutrophication process, TSITP (0.429), and TSICL (0.386) (Table 5). Besides, it was reported that the decrease of the forest cover in the PSR basin has intensified the drought and the minimum flows (Andrade & Ribeiro, 2020).…”

“…This scenario of intense anthropogenic activity impacts negatively the water quality of the PSR and its affluents. The impacts are mainly related to land use in the riparian zone and hydric pollution (Andrade & Ribeiro, 2020). Recently, the Southeast of Brazil faced a scenario of water scarcity considered the worst in 80 years (Targa & Batista, 2015).…”
