Potassium leaching test in evaluation of popcorn seed vigor

Abstract: The search for tests that offer fast and reliable information on the physiological potential of seeds is of fundamental importance for quality control programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the potassium leaching test in identification of different vigor levels of popcorn seed lots. Five seed lots of the hybrids AP8203 and AP4512 were tested for moisture content, and physiological quality was evaluated by tests of germination, first count of germination, and seedling emergence in the… Show more

“…In seeds of C. anguria, the germination test lasts for a period of 8 days (Brasil 2009), a relative long period when considering a decision-making process. Thus, the use of vigor tests is essential, once these are consistent and produce rapid information concerning processes of physiological deterioration in seeds (Catão et al 2019).…”

“…Seed production is considered scarce when compared with other vegetables and those seeds generally exhibit low quality. The utilization of seeds with high physiological potential is important to set up crops (Kavan et al 2019) once it enables higher yield (Catão et al 2019).…”

“…The use of seeds of good physiological quality is important to ensure that after sowing, the grains continue to develop and become productive (Catão et al, 2019;Lopes et al, 2018). All stages, from seed selection to cultivation, harvest, and postharvest, when not conducted properly, can negatively affect the nutritional and technological quality of the grains.…”
