Seedling emergence and yield performance of wheat cultivars depending on seed vigor and sowing density

Abstract: -The use of high quality seeds, the appropriate management practices and the selection of promising genotypes are strategies to exploit the wheat yield potential. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of the vigor level of wheat seeds submitted to different sowing densities on seedling emergence, tillering and yield performance culture. The experiments were conducted in Londrina and Ponta Grossa, Paraná state, Brazil, with a completely randomized block design, in a 2x2x2 factorial scheme, wit… Show more

“…These results show the importance of adjusting the time of sowing, which, in this study, favored the initial seedlings stand, and later increased the grain yield, as also noted by Mielezrski & Marcos Filho (2012) for pea. However, despite the lower physiological quality, Tec Frontale presented the highest average yield, contrary to the results found by Abati et al (2017), where the high vigor of wheat seeds treated with imidacloprid and carboxy + thiram benefited the seedlings stand and grain yield. For Schuch et al (2000), differences in vigor of black oat seeds affected only the initial plant growth, and the effects of seed vigor were reduced as the crop developed.…”

“…The character number of tillers per plant is influenced by many factors, including genetics, which can explain the high coefficient of variation value (Pimentel Gomes, 2009). In a study developed by Abati et al (2017), in which they have evaluated number of tillers per plant, a similar coefficient of variation was reported (29.3%).…”

“…More vigorous seeds lead to faster initial growth of seedlings, with greater capture of light and better use of resources from the environment (Amaro et al, 2014). However, at greater densities, plants coming from vigorous seeds compete more for environmental resources, due to their greater capacity for establishment in the field (Abati et al,2017), which contributes to obtaining a large number of plants per area. Thus, they may produce seeds with smaller amounts of seed reserves due to the greater intraspecific competition established.…”

“…Seeds of different vigor levels and different cultivars at the same sowing density show different results regarding tillering capacity, germination, and seedling emergence (Abati et al, 2017); they establish different conditions for development of the crop and of the seeds produced. Thus, the interaction between initial vigor and the sowing density used can lead to different results regarding seed yield and physiological potential.…”
