Effect of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on the germination ofSenna macranthera seeds (DC. ex Collad.) H. S. Irwin & Baneby under salt stress

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) has been used as stimulating of the germination process for many species. However, there are few studies evaluating the effect of nitric oxide donor in the regulation of seed germination under salt stress, especially for native forest species. The objective was to evaluate the effects of SNP, an NO donor substance, on germination of Senna macranthera seeds under salt stress. The seeds were germinated at different osmotic potentials induced by NaCl solution (0.0, -0.1, -0.2, -0.3, -0.4 and -0.… Show more

“…NO is also able to reduce the effects of seed aging (Pereira et al, 2010) and increase tolerance to various abiotic stresses, such as water stress, salt stress, and stress from heavy metals (Silva et al, 2015;Kaiser et al, 2016;Pires et al, 2016). Oxidative stress, brought about by increase in concentration of superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and alkyl peroxides, can be combatted by NO, since it has antioxidant properties (Silva et al, 2015;Pires et al, 2016).…”

“…In the presence of transition metals, such as iron, copper, or zinc, the NO can interact to form metal-nitrosyl complexes. These complexes may be related to the regulatory effects of the transcription factors of NO and certain enzymes (Silva et al, 2015). Tolerance is generated by stimulation of the activity of one or more enzymes of the antioxidant system, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase, reducing the action of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) (Pires et al, 2016).…”

“…Each treatment was primed in a single Erlenmeyer flask, without replications. The priming solutions used were distilled water (water), 0.2% potassium nitrate solution (KNO 3 ) (Cardoso et al, 2014;Cardoso et al, 2015), 0.5 mmol.L −1 spermidine solution (SPER) (Hussain et al, 2015;Lopes et al, 2018), 50 mg.L −1 pure gibberellin solution (GB) (Batista et al, 2015;Cardoso et al, 2015), and 0.10 mmol.L −1 sodium nitroprusside solution (SNP) (Ataíde et al, 2015;Silva et al, 2015;Faraji et al, 2018). The seeds used as a control were not primed.…”

“…Treatment with (200 µM) Sodium nitroprusside+ (100 µM) sodium ferrocyanide showed an average of 0.96 providing a 14.14% reduction in the qL parameter (quenching related to photosynthesis photoinhibition) when compared to the control treatment (deionized water), which obtained an average of 1.12., As shown in Table 5. ISSN 2166-0379 2020 According to Silva (2015), NO can react quickly with O2.-producing peroxynitrite (ONOO-) (Popova & Tuan, 2010), being able to act in increasing the synthesis and / or activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as ascorbate peroxidases (DEL RIO, 2015), resulting in the activation of defense mechanisms (Saxena & Shekhawa, 2013).…”
