“…Although the limits of the project have been highlighted on other occasions (Barbalho, 2018), for now, it is worth pointing out that, from the point of view of resource distribution, Points of Culture privileged sectors are normally marginalized by cultural policies, empowering new social actors, favoring processes of artification (Schapiro and Heinich, 2007), including the outsider art (Zolberg, 2009), and the blurring of boundaries in the autonomy of contemporary art (Sant’Anna et al, 2017). They are part of a broader movement that has called into question the autonomy of art, bringing artistic and political movements together and causing new mediators to emerge in the public sphere (Sant'Anna et al, 2017).…”

“…Prompted by the debates on the right to the city that have taken over Rio de Janeiro since 2013, young artists have appropriated the port area with a deep reflection on the role they have been playing there. DIY spaces, based on collective funding and on an extensive network of mutual cooperation, without the support of culture policies, have begun to incorporate practices that have been increasingly bringing art and politics together (Sant'Anna et al, 2017).…”

“…The effects on MAR were clear. The dynamics of incorporation of political debates and criticism by the institutions has been widely discussed on other occasions (Sant'Anna, 2013Sant'Anna et al, 2017). Built as an anchor of the creative hub in the port area, this museum was, since the day of its foundation, the target of protests that opposed intense real estate speculation and claimed the right to the city.…”
