Can physical exercise modulate cortisol level in subjects with depression? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent medical illness that is associated with chronic stress. Patients with MDD can show an imbalance in cortisol levels, which can be restored with the remission of symptoms. Physical exercise training has been used as a tool to promote changes in cortisol levels in healthy individuals. However, it is unknown if exercise can produce the same results in individuals with MDD. Objective: To review evidence of cortisol changes after exercise training in indi… Show more

“…The greater improvement percentage in group (B) than in group (A) reflected the beneficial effect of walking program on a treadmill on lowering serum cortisol levels in PMS females. This result can be supported with Beserra et al (24) who revealed a positive effect of physical exercising on reducing cortisol concentrations in individuals with major depressive disorder. Moreover, sensitivity analysis and subgroup analyses showed an influence of exercise type (aerobic exercise) on lowering cortisol concentrations.…”

“…62,63 In a systematic review and meta-analysis study, the physical exercise showed to promote the levels of cortisol among subjects with mild depression disorders (MDD), whoever these findings significantly controlled by the type of exercise, frequency, and the type of cortisol measurement. 69 Several studies performed on middle-aged/older adult individuals suggest beneficial positive effects on mood, well-being, and cognition. [70][71][72] In a recent pilot study, the feasibility of aerobic exercise as an antidepressant treatment strategy was evaluated in young adults with MDD.…”

“…Considering the moderating effects of social support for the relationship between SLE and HCC, mental health practitioners should provide more social and psychological support to schizophrenia patients throughout the course of this disease, especially in the stable phase (20,43,56). Furthermore, aerobic exercises have been proved to decrease the cortisol levels (57). Taichi is a form of physical exercise and moving meditation originated in China.…”
