The role of memory in posttraumatic stress disorder: implications for clinical practice

Abstract: Introduction: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly prevalent disorder with important social consequences. Several models have been developed with the aim of understanding the mechanisms underlying its symptoms. Intrusions are idiosyncratic symptoms that commonly take the form of involuntary recollection of images or flashbacks about the traumatic event. Objective: To review how memory is conceptualized in each of these models and the implications for clinical practice. Methods: A narrative review of… Show more

“…Our approach draws on the premise that disruption in basic brain information-processing functions underlying cognition forms the foundation upon which various aspects of PTSD are built. For example, impaired declarative memory in PTSD, most evident for verbal learning and memory (7), may contribute to development of perturbed emotional memories acquired as a result of PTSD-producing traumas (8,9), and is relevant for treatment outcome (7,(9)(10)(11)(12). Memory intrusions are a classic PTSD symptom, and memory is a primary target for evidence-based treatments using therapeutic exposure to traumatic memories so that they can be controlled.…”

“…ПТСР іноді розглядається як розлад пам'яті, в якому реакції на страх надмірно узагальнюються внаслідок порушеного механізму її консолідації та / або реконсолідації [8]. Сучасні дослідження показують, що пошук спогадів за певних умов відкриває «вікно» на 1-6 год, протягом якого відбувається їх активізація, що може їх оновити, змінити і навіть стерти [9,10].…”
