Abstract: Ecology of herbaceous vegetation on bancadas lateríticas (cangas) in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil). Bancadas lateríticas are ironstone outcrops that surround Morraria do Urucum and Morraria do Rabicho. This paper analyzes the floristic composition and structure of three ironstone outcrops, in quadrats of 1 m², and reveals possible intrinsic patterns in site subsets by means of ordination analysis (detrended correspondence analysis -DCA) using cover data of plant species. A total of 66 vascular spe… Show more

“…Some species belonging to the families Poaceae, Eriocaulaceae and Xyridaceae occurred exclusively in quartzitic outcrops, as has been reported by other studies as well (Viana & Lombardi 2007;Messias et al 2012;Carmo & Jacobi 2013;Takahasi & Meirelles 2014). According to Messias et al (2011;, the great abundance of species of Poaceae in quartzitic rupestrian complexes is related there ability to adapt to water deficit and seasonal flooding, as well as their ability to explore more superficial layers of the soil, which are richer in nutrients.…”

“…Holzh., Bonamia balansae Hallier f. and Bauhinia leptantha Malme are considered as rare species because of their restricted distribution or the scarcity of information on the size of their populations (Giulietti et al 2009). Two species are considered endemic to the ironstone outcrops at the Urucum Plateau: G. centrota (Tomás et al 2010) and Discocactus ferricola Buining & Brederoo, being the latter also present in Morro do Mutum, Bolivia (Tomás et al 2010, Takahasi & Meirelles 2014.…”

“…However, in the Urucum Plateau region, located in the municipalities of Corumbá and Ladário, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, they not only occur on tops but also in low altimetric levels and slopes (Del'arco et al 1982, Takahasi 2015. These low altimetric ironstone outcrops are called "bancadas lateríticas" (Takahasi & Meirelles 2014).…”

“…The ironstone outcrop vegetation, designated ferruginous fields, is adapted to conditions of high insolation levels, great thermal amplitude, and soil absence and periods of water scarcity, in addition to winds and floods (Takahasi and Meirelles, 2014).…”
