Condylectomy and “surgery first” approach: An expedited treatment for condylar hyperplasia in a patient with facial asymmetry

Abstract: Condylar Hyperplasia (CH) is a self-limiting pathology condition that produces severe facial deformity at the expense of mandibular asymmetry. In this case report a 15-year-old female patient was diagnosed with Unilateral Condylar Hiperplasia (UCH) by mean of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and histological study. A high condylectomy in the right condyle was performed to stop the active status of the hyperplasia. A month after condylectomy, orthognathic jaw impaction and asymmetric mandibula… Show more

“…El RAP aumenta la reorganización del tejido y la curación mediante el aumento transitorio de la resorción ósea localizada y una mayor remodelación. Esta es la explicación de la aceleración del movimiento dental ortodóntico durante un período de 4 a 5 meses aproximadamente 26,[28][29][30] .…”

“…Orthodontic treatment time depends on the complexity of case. The shortest reported treatment time is 4 months (Figure 1a-d, 2a-d) but generally it takes 6-12 months [17,26,28,33,35,[47][48][49][50]. Tooth extraction is the factor that influences the total treatment time [13], and in some cases, the time range was reported between 10 and 19 months [51][52][53].…”

“…Class III with openbite and asymmetry cases with SFA are the other published studies. SFA in Class II cases and in some deformities like TMJ disorders or condylar hyperplasia is rare [27][28][29].…”

“…Alyamani and Abuzinada described 18 cases, where 15 were females [4]. On the other hand, other authors also indicate slight female predominance [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Etiological factors remain unknown, but many are taken into consideration, especially endocrinal and trauma followed by other factors such as genetic, hereditary, or perhaps even iatrogenic once in the close proximity of the joint [5][6][7][8].…”
