Evaluation of stiffness and plastic deformation of active ceramic self-ligating bracket clips after repetitive opening and closure movements

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether repetitive opening and closure of self-ligating bracket clips can cause plastic deformation of the clip. METHODS: Three types of active/interactive ceramic self-ligating brackets (n = 20) were tested: In-Ovation C, Quicklear and WOW. A standardized controlled device performed 500 cycles of opening and closure movements of the bracket clip with proper instruments and techniques adapted as recommended by the manufacturer of each bracket type. Two tensile tes… Show more

“…The questions raised in our study reinforced the affirmations of other authors that the supposed advantage of lower friction in self-ligating brackets was still controversial, when compared with conventional brackets associated with archwires with rectangular sections, particularly when comparisons were made between active self-ligating brackets and the conventional types 4,11,14,16,26,27 .…”

“…Self-ligating brackets were first introduced in the 1930s and several types of these brackets have become commercially available in the past 20 years 1. Self-ligating brackets can be classified into two groups according to their closing mechanism: passive clips and interactive clips 2…”

“…Clinicians may use pins, stainless steel ligature; self ligating clips and circular elastomers to ligate orthodontic archwires to the brackets. 1 , 2 Elastomeric ligatures are most commonly used by clinicians due to their several advantages including low cost, easy application, reduced chair time, patient comfort and satisfaction. 3 …”
