Show more

“…CHIKV uses this artifice to hijack host defense and be able to infect target cells on epithelial tissue. On the other hand, after this initial step, CHIKV infection induces an exacerbated local innate immunity (Tanabe et al, 2018;Cook et al, 2019;Foresto et al, 2019;Maucourant et al, 2019;Hiroki et al, 2020) in which macrophages (MØ), natural killer cells (NK), neutrophils, DCs, basophils, and eosinophils are recruited to the site of infection as a result of the release of several chemoattractant molecules by the infected cells (Ng et al, 2009;Waymouth et al, 2013;Chirathaworn et al, 2020). Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and granulocytemacrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) are the main chemokines released by these cells (Couderc et al, 2008;Ng et al, 2009).…”

“…Studies in a population with liver and kidney transplantation, that had vectorial infection, years after transplantation, showed the course of infection similar to patients who received the contaminated organs and, non-transplanted patients without any organ involvement or deaths, due to critical complications [18,19,23,24]. The above statement suggests that the prolonged use of immunosuppressants, does not favor the immunopathogenesis of the infection and, that in this case, the drug has only a protective effect.…”

“…67 However, transplant patients travelling to endemic areas should be instructed to maintain clinical surveillance and seek medical attention in case of fever, arthralgia or rash, for up to 7 days after the trip. 62,63 It is speculated that the use of immunosuppression in these cases may influence the course of the infection, favouring a more benign evolution, which included oral prednisone as one of the pillars in the management of persistent joint pain after CHIK. 64,78,79 While the immune response to CHIKV has been partially explained, there is still much that remains to be clarified.…”

“…In general, the prognosis of renal transplant patients with CHIK was good, with complete recovery of symptoms, despite some patients presenting transient worsening of renal function and the need for hospitalisation. [62][63][64][65] Moreover, kidney transplantation was safe in cases of a living donor who had CHIK with IgM antibodies persistently positive for up to 101 days, but with negative NAT. 66 In a retrospective analysis of 32…”
