What are the species of phorophytes of Vanilla palmarum (Orchidaceae) in Brazil? An assessment of emblematic specificity with palm tree species

Abstract: Vanilla palmarum is an obligately epiphytic orchid distributed widely throughout South America with emblematic specificity for species of palms. This epiphyte-phorophyte association was examined through the analysis of specimens available via the database of Centro de Referência em Informação Ambiental and from Brazilian herbaria. We recognized nine species as hosts of V. palmarum in Brazil: Acrocomia aculeata, Attalea phalerata, Attalea speciosa, Elaeis guineensis, Mauritia flexuosa, Syagrus cearensis, S. cor… Show more

“…Distribution, ecology and conservation status: Vanilla palmarum is widely distributed in South America, occurring in Bolivia, Brazil, Guyana, Peru, Surinam, and Venezuela (Soto Arenas & Cribb 2010). In Brazil, it occurs in the Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Caatinga and Cerrado, in the north, northeast and central-west regions (Barbarena et al 2019). In the study area it was found in tabuleiro forests in Paraíba, inhabiting the culm of Elaeis guineenses Jacq., an invasive palm, popularly known as Dendê (Moreira et Warmingia Rchb.f., Otia Bot.…”

“…However, some can be found in uncommon habitats like marshy forests (e.g., V. arcuata and V. paludosa [30]). While most species can climb to various substrates (trees and rocks), an epiphytic Vanilla (V. palmarum) is exclusively associated with nine species of palms in South America [31]. Some species can be found in different types of ecosystems like V. inornata [32].…”

“…Orchidaceaeapart from a few truly epiphytic species (e.g. Vanilla palmarum, Barberena et al 2019) and a self-supporting terrestrial (Pansarin 2010), members of this genus are usually climbing plants. These are often described as "hemiepiphytes" (without qualifier) (e.g.…”
