“…Based on the morphological and phylogenetic data presented here, three independent taxa of H. subg. Hymenophyllum can be found in the Atlantic Forest domain, in contrast with previous floristic studies (Sturm 1859; Windisch 2014; Gonzatti and Windisch 2018). The study of specimens in herbaria revealed a sample labelled as H. tunbrigense , deposited at BHCB herbarium ( Salino 12463a , BHCB 111341), showing a set of characters that differs from that of other samples of this species from the study area.…”

“…Since its original description, the name has been widely applied to many populations around the world with related morphologies, such as on the African continent (Roux 2009) and North America (Farrar 1993). In the Neotropics, the name H. tunbrigense has been applied in the Mesoamerican region (Pacheco 1995), Jamaica (Proctor 1985), and southeast Brazil (Gonzatti and Windisch 2018), to Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina (Diem and Lichtenstein 1959; Larsen et al 2013).…”

“…Hymenophyllum asplenioides displays a high phenotypic plasticity and its occurrence extends from Mexico to the southeast of Brazil (Stolze, 1976;Windisch, 2014;Gonzatti & Windisch, 2018). The chromosome number n = 36 found for H. asplenioides is in agreement with previous reports by Walker (1966) for specimens from Jamaica.…”

“…Houard (1933) also recorded galls on leaves and stems of H. pulchellum. This ability of the gall inducers to manipulate different organs in the same plant is occasionally long membranous leaves of filmy ferns (see Gonzatti and Windisch, 2018). Interestingly, in H. pulchellum, the galls are close to tuffs of leaves ( Figure 4C-E), which may be a source of nutrients to galling or only an error in the manipulation of plant systems.…”
