Show more

“…Currently, the species in Brazil and Uruguay are considered of great vulnerability since the adult plants are centenary and suffer with the increase in the area for livestock and intensive agriculture. Human action in the native areas causes a great impact on the regeneration cycle of the trees [ 64 , 65 , 66 ].…”

“…In short, we may point out the main difficulties being: the definition of tree and forage species, the training of farmers and ranchers, and the promotion of the innovation culture in the territory. Therefore, the challenges are even more significant since the heterogeneous landscapes of the Pampa formed by floodplains, native countryside, shrub formations, riparian forests, and rock outcrops (Pillar & Lange 2015) have been fragmented and replaced by an agricultural matrix of low stability and diversity (Marchi et al, 2018). Unlike previous cattle transformation cycles, which tended towards new ecological stability standards, the current cycle involves an often-irreversible substitution.…”

“…The Pampa, on the other hand, is limited to one Brazilian state and has been largely altered by agriculture, grazing and the introduction and spread of invasive alien species (Echer et al 2015). Formed by highly diverse ecosystems in terms of animals and plants, the Pampa is characterized by a peculiar floristic composition (Araujo et al 2018, Marchi et al 2018. This diversity is, however, threatened, while studies on its genetic heritage and conservation status are scarce (Santos & Silva 2011, Echer et al 2015.…”
