Genetic parameters and path analysis for root yield of cassava under drought and early harvest

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters and identify traits that contribute to early yield in Manihot esculenta Crantz. Ten traits were evaluated in two experiments, one with 138 genotypes and the other with 133, using a completely randomized block design with four replications. All genotype effects were significant. The accuracy was high for the traits, except leaf retention (0.57), and reliability ranged from 0.33 to 0.75. Root weight (RW) and number of roots (NR) showed the highest … Show more

“…Thus, the effect of genotypes for RW observed in the present study may also have been influenced by the season of evaluation of this variable. The overall mean yield assessed in the test was significantly higher than values found by Oliveira et al (2021), thus indicating that the genotypes evaluated in the present study are well adapted to water stress conditions.…”

“…A similar response was found by Njoku and Mbah (2020) when investigating inter-relations between fresh root yield and thirteen quantitative traits related to the yield of recently developed cassava genotypes in southeast Nigeria. Oliveira et al (2021), when evaluating genetic parameters and the effects of different morphological traits on root yield by path analysis, observed a direct, positive effect of RD on RW and a positive correlation between these two variables. This result suggests that RW is a good predictor of the RD trait under water stress, enabling indirect selection for RD.…”

“…The calculation of genetic parameters in quinoa has helped genetic improvement programs to be more successful in selecting superior genotypes, considering quantitative characteristics (Yadav 2021). In addition, the relationships between the genotypic coefficient of variation (CVg), environmental coefficient of variation (CVe), and heritability (ha 2 ) are parameters that measure data reliability and the success in selecting superior genotypes (Oliveira et al 2021, Santos et al 2023. The genotypic coefficient of variation is the proportionality of gain relative to the average, and therefore is expected to be higher than the environmental coefficient of variation (Amabile et al 2015).…”

“…Genotypic coefficient of variation (CV g ), environmental coefficient of variation (CV e ), and relative coefficient of variation (CV r ) and broad sense heritability were then estimated (Adjebeng-Danquah et al, 2017;Oliveira et al, 2021).…”
