Resistance of Cucurbita Spp. To Fusarium Solani for Use as Rootstock

Abstract: ABSTRACT Fusarium solani f. sp. cucurbitae (Fsc) is a soil pathogen and the adoption of resistant rootstocks is an effective method of control. Hybrids of Cucurbita spp. are the main rootstock used for watermelon. This study aimed to evaluate the virulence of Fsc race 1 (Fsc1) in three cucurbits and check the reaction of Cucurbita spp. genotypes to the fungus for its use as rootstock. Four experiments were performed. The virulence of Fsc1 in melon, watermelon and Cucurbita spp. was evaluated in experim… Show more

“…Cucurbita spp. germplasms that present high frequency of individuals with tolerance to Fsc were identified as rootstock candidates [18]. Additionally, grafted Citrullus lanatus on Ferro, GV 100 (C. maxima × C. moschata), and Just (Cucurbita spp.)…”

“…The DSI is based on a visual non-parametric scale ranging from 0 to 4: 0 = no damage, 1 = leaf epinasty/soaked crown, 2 = constricted/girdling crown, 3 = wilt/chlorosis, and 4 = death; this is analogous to other authors [6,9,18]. The percentage of plants with symptomatology plotted against time produced an area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) that represented the disease evolution.…”

“…Cucurbites in general have morpho-agronomic characteristics that make it possible to use them in a variety of ways, whether in feeding or culture management when used as a rootstock (CHAUDHARI et al, 2017;PINHEIRO et al, 2019;SANTOS et al, 2020;ZHOU et al, 2014).Grafting has been very sought after for cucurbits in the management of diseases, including charcoal rot (COHEN; ELKABETZ; EDELSTEIN, 2016), caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid. (1947), which affects several economically important crops of the family, such as melon and watermelon (MEDEIROS et al, 2015).…”
