Abstract:RESUMO A Praça Municipal, localizada na área do antigo Cais do Valongo no Rio de Janeiro, é uma obra pouco conhecida de Grandjean de Montigny. As fachadas projetadas pelo arquiteto francês formavam a moldura arquitetônica do chafariz comemorativo do desembarque da imperatriz Teresa Cristina. A proposta deste texto é apresentar a história do projeto de Grandjean de Montigny e identificar porque o conjunto arquitetônico da praça era considerado no século XIX como o espaço monumental da cidade.
