Chromosomal distribution of the retroelements Rex 1, Rex 3 and Rex 6 in species of the genus Harttia and Hypostomus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae)

Abstract: The transposable elements (TE) have been widely applied as physical chromosome markers. However, in Loricariidae there are few physical mapping analyses of these elements. Considering the importance of transposable elements for chromosomal evolution and genome organization, this study conducted the physical chromosome mapping of retroelements (RTEs) Rex1, Rex3 and Rex6 in seven species of the genus Harttia and four species of the genus Hypostomus, aiming to better understand the organization and dynamics of ge… Show more

“…Siluriformes (Actinopterygii; Teleostei) is a monophyletic order that covers a large deal of the freshwater fish diversity, with more than 3000 species and 36 families [ 1 , 2 ]. Of the six Loricariidae subfamilies currently recognized, Hypostominae and Loricariinae are the most representative ones, with the highest number of species (579 and 302, respectively) and a remarkable karyotypic diversity [ 2 , 3 ]. Loricariinae fishes are distributed throughout South and Central American rivers, including two tribes: Harttiini and Loricariini.…”

“…Despite such great species diversity, cytogenetic studies are available for only eight of them, all from Brazilian Southern regions, with exception for Harttia punctata [ 3 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. However, although still limited, the chromosome data are already enough to notice a conspicuous variation of the diploid number (2n) in the genus, ranging from 2n = 52♀/53♂ in H. carvalhoi [ 8 ] to 2n = 62♀♂ in H. absaberi [ 9 ].…”

“…and Rex3 e Rex6 retroelements. 68 These results demonstrate that, although most Loricariinae species share a C-banding pattern, the content of heterochromatic regions is quite heterogeneous, ranging from repetitive DNA relates to rDNA dispersion to other classes that are considered hotspots for chromosomal rearrangements.…”
