Aim The aim of this study is to describe and illustrate with maps the distribution and shape of biotic areas of endemism of fish clades in the western Pacific, including East Asia and Australasia. This study also depicts the allopatric or sympatric distributions of major subclades and makes general statements about the shared history among the areas using information provided by the shape of the distributions, phylogeny, and geology. This study also tests the hypothesis that Australasia is a locus of survival or differentiation for inferred “basal” subclades of global taxa. Location Western Pacific. Taxa Teleost fishes. Methods Clades are mapped to illustrate the shape of their distribution and to infer the shared relationships among distribution, phylogeny, and geology. Phylogenetic hypotheses for groups of taxa are converted into area cladograms which are used to summarize area relationships. This information is compared with that from other clades, ecology, and geology, to make general statements about the biogeographical history of the fish biota. Results The distribution of each clade has an identifiable shape. The “basal” subclades of many widespread teleost fish taxa are endemic to the western Pacific, including East Asia and Australasia; hence, this is the inferred location of a principal vicariant event for each clade. The “basal” subclade and its sister clade may be allopatric and represent remnants of general distributional patterns. The distribution of a clade, including its geography and its relationship with a geographical or geological feature, conveys historical information about the clade and the area in which it evolved: its area of endemism. These features repeat in unrelated or distantly related taxa in the biota indicating a shared history. Main conclusions The western Pacific including East Asia and Australasia is a locus of survival or differentiation, the site of the principal breaks in the distribution, for an array of teleost clades. It is not their center of origin. Biology and geology should be integrated in biogeographical analyses. Modern distributions reflect remnants of once more widespread distributions. When biogeography acknowledges the connections and correlations between geology and biology, it implements a guiding principle of the work of Alexander von Humboldt.

During the early stages of oogenesis, the Balbiani body is formed in the primary oocytes. It consists of the Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and numerous mitochondria aggregated with germ plasm, but its form may differ among animals. Hypothetically, during oogenesis oocytes become adapted to future development in two different environments depending on internal or external fertilization. We aimed to investigate, using light and transmission electron microscopy, the development of the Balbiani body during oogenesis in representatives of Osteoglossiformes, one of the most basal Teleostei groups. We analyzed the structure of oogonia and primary oocytes in the internally fertilizing butterflyfish Pantodon buchholzi and the externally fertilizing Osteoglossum bicirrhosum and Arapaima gigas to compare formation of the Balbiani body in relation to modes of fertilization. We demonstrated that the presence of the germ plasm as well as the fusion and fission of mitochondria are the conserved features of the Bb. However, each species exhibited also some peculiar features, including the presence of three types of ooplasm with different electron density and mitochondria‐associated membranes in P. buchholzi; annulate lamellae, complexes of the Golgi apparatus, ER network, and lysosome‐like bodies in O. bicirrhosum; as well as karmellae and whorls formed by the lamellae of the ER in A. gigas. Moreover, the form of the germ plasm observed in close contact with mitochondria differed between osteoglossiforms, with a “net‐like” structure in P. buchholzi, the presence of numerous strings in O. bicirrhosum, and irregular accumulations in A. gigas. These unique features indicate that the extreme diversity of gamete structure observed so far only in the spermatozoa of osteoglossiforms is also characteristic for oocyte development in these basal teleosts. Possible reason of this variability is a period of about 150 million years of independent evolution of the lineages.

The early Palaeogene represents a key interval in the evolution of modern marine fish faunas. Together with the first appearances of many familiar fish lineages characteristic of contemporary marine environments, early Palaeogene marine deposits worldwide feature the occurrence of osteoglossid bonytongues. Their presence in marine rocks is surprising, given that these fishes are strictly associated with freshwater environments in modern settings and in other parts of the fossil record. Despite its possible relevance to faunal recovery after the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K–Pg) extinction, this marine osteoglossid radiation is relatively understudied. Here we describe an osteoglossid specimen from marine Danian deposits of western Greenland (Eqalulik Formation, northern Nuussuaq Peninsula). It consists of disarticulated cranial, pectoral and vertebral material belonging to a relatively large‐bodied predator, similar to the widespread †Brychaetus but with some distinctive features. This specimen expands the geographical range of extinct osteoglossids to the Arctic and represents one of the earliest records of this group in marine deposits. We review other fossil occurrences of marine osteoglossids, highlighting temporal and biogeographical patterns that characterize their rise, diversification and sudden disappearance in the middle Eocene. It is likely that the transition from freshwater to marine environments occurred around the K–Pg boundary, possibly related to ecological replacement of predatory fish lineages that went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. Further study of the Eqalulik Formation fauna could yield additional insight into the consequences of the end‐Cretaceous extinction with regard to marine fish evolution and the assembly of modern marine faunas.
