A new species of Farlowella (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) of the F. nattereri species-group from the rio Xingu basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil, with comments on Farlowella jauruensis , a poorly-known species from the upper rio Paraguai basin

Abstract: A new species of Farlowella is described from eighteen specimens collected in the upper rio Xingu basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The new species is a member of the Farlowella nattereri species-group and can be distinguished from other members of the group, with exception of Farlowella jauruensis, by exhibiting a proportionally shorter snout. The new species is distinguished from F. jauruensis by differences on the cleithrum and plate morphology, by counts of pelvic and caudal-fin rays, and by the color patt… Show more

“…These groups were proposed based mainly on the presence and number of vertical rows of lateral plates (counted from predorsal to lateral abdominal plates), number of rows of abdominal plates, degree of development of odontodes on the snout, and length and breadth of the snout. Subsequent to this study, descriptions of new species [99][100][101][102][103], followed the groups and characters outlined by Retzer and Page [81]. Nevertheless, five of those six species groups were not recovered as monophyletic (except for the Farlowella acus group) and the characters proposed to diagnose them are not phylogenetically informative.…”

“…Standard length (SL) is expressed in mm and all other measurements are expressed as percentages of SL, except subunits of the head, which are expressed as percentages of head length (HL). Terminology, meristics and measurements follow Ballen et al (2016a). Meristics are reported followed by their frequencies in parentheses with an asterisk indicating the count of the holotype.…”
