A new species of the armored catfish Parotocinclus (Loricariidae: Hypoptopomatinae), from the Amazon basin in Colombia

Abstract: A new species of hypoptopomatine cascudinho is described from a creek tributary to the Amazon River in Leticia, Amazonas Departament, Colombia. The new species of Parotocinclus is distinguished from congeners from northeastern to southeastern Brazilian rivers in having the cheek canal plate elongated posteriorly on the ventral surface of head and contacting the cleithrum. It is diagnosed from P. collinsae (Essequibo River basin, Guiana) and P. halbothi (rio Trombetas basin, Brazil and Marowijne River, Suriname… Show more

“…The non-monophyletic Parotocinclus is up-to-date composed by 30 species distributed in the cisandine neotropics drainages (Lehmann et al, 2015;Ramos et al, 2016;Roxo et al, 2016). The resolution of this systematic problem depends on the designation of new genera that reflect the relationships among the lineages currently assigned to Parotocinclus (Lehmann et al, 2014).…”

“…The genus is widely distributed in cis-andean South America, including the Orinoco, Amazon, Parnaíba and São Francisco river basins, the Atlantic coastal drainages of the Guianas, and the coastal rivers from Northeastern Brazilian states as well as the coastal rivers between the states of Espírito Santo and Santa Catarina (Garavello, 1977(Garavello, , 1988Schaefer, 2003;Lehmann et al, 2015;Roxo et al, 2016).…”

“…Cramer et al 2011; Roxo et al 2014; Silva et al 2016). This genus is distributed through almost all hydrographic systems in South America from the Guyana Shield drainages and Amazon Shield tributaries to the coastal drainages of eastern and southeastern Brazil, including the rio São Francisco basin (Sarmento-Soares et al 2009; Lehmann et al 2014, 2015). …”

“…Currently, Parotocinclus comprises 29 valid nominal species (Ramos et al, 2013;Lehmann et al, 2013Lehmann et al, , 2014Lehmann et al, , 2015, but it is recognized as a polyphyletic assemblage (Gauger & Buckup, 2005;Lehmann, 2006;Lehmann et al, 2013;Martins et al, 2014). The genus Parotocinclus has a high species richness in northeastern Brazil, being represented by twelve species (Ramos et al, 2013).…”
