Population structure and reproductive biology of Loricariichthys melanocheilus Reis & Pereira, 2000 (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in the rio Ibicuí, Brazil

Abstract: The objective of this study was to analyze population structure (spatial distribution, seasonal distribution and distribution by length classes, sex ratio and length-weight relationship) and aspects of the reproductive biology of Loricariichthys melanocheilus. Fish were sampled bimonthly using gillnets and trammel nets in lentic and lotic environments in the rio Ibicuí, between the years 2000 and 2001. Were collected 410 specimens: 230 females, 164 males and 16 specimens whose sex could not be determined. A gr… Show more

“…These changes coincide with the periods before and after the peak of the reproductive period, which is in October/November and December/ January (Zardo & Behr, 2015). Reductions in the feeding activity, mainly in females in the reproductive period, are expected because of a considerable increase in gonadal size, leading to a reduction of the coelomic cavity (Barbieri & Barbieri, 1984).…”

“…Within the studied assemblage, most species showed a marked reproductive seasonality, with reproductive activity concentrated in the warmer months of the summer. This strong reproductive seasonality is consistent with other studies of loricariids (Dei Tos et al ., ; Querol et al ., ; Marcucci et al ., ; Bailly et al ., ; Zardo & Behr, ) and is coherent with the wide seasonal variation in day length and temperature in this subtropical system. Given the large differences in environmental conditions and resource availability between cold and warm periods, when flood pulses generally occur (Bailly et al ., ; Lowe‐McConnell, ; Scarabotti et al ., , ; Wootton, ), strong selective pressures are expected to concentrate reproduction during the warm season.…”
