Species of Centromochlus are widely distributed in South America, with records for major basins such as the Amazon and Orinoco, rivers draining the Guiana Shield such as the Essequibo, Courantyne (Corantijn), Coppename, Maroni, and Oyapock, and Brazilian Shield drainages as upper Paraná and São Francisco. In the last four years, three species of Centromochlus have been described, raising the total number of valid species to sixteen. The new species of Centromochlus described herein is diagnosed by having black ground color sharply delimited from a white underside by conspicuous wavy border. The new species is recorded from the Nhamundá, left bank tributary to the lower Amazon that drain from the Brazilian portion of the Guiana Shield. Although apparently similar to some Tatia species (e.g. Tatia musaica, T. carolae and T. melanoleuca), the new species possess two conditions of the Weberian apparatus otherwise observed only in Centromochlus heckelii and C. existimatus among centromochlin catfishes. The new Centromochlus comprises small catfishes with adults ranging from 48 to 57 mm SL.Espécies de Centromochlus têm ampla distribuição pela América do Sul, com registros para as principais bacias como o Amazonas e Orinoco, rios com drenagens no Escudo das Guianas como Essequibo, Corentyne, Copename, Maroni e Oiapoque, e ainda pelas drenagens do Escudo Brasileiro como Alto Paraná e São Francisco. Nos últimos quatro anos foram descritas três espécies de Centromochlus elevando o número de espécies válidas para dezesseis. A nova espécie de Centromochlus aqui descrita é diagnosticada pela presença de dorso escuro abruptamente separado de um ventre branco por uma barra ondulada conspícua. A nova espécie foi descoberta no rio Nhamundá um igarapé de água clara do baixo Amazonas com rede de drenagem a partir da porção brasileira do Escudo das Guianas. Apesar de aparentemente similar a algumas espécies de Tatia (e.g. Tatia musaica, T. carolae e T. melanoleuca), indivíduos da nova espécie apresentam uma morfologia particular do aparelho de Weber até então reportadas apenas para C. heckelii e C. existimatus, entre os bagres centromoclíneos, e que merecem maiores discussões. O novo Centromochlus inclui pequenos bagres com adultos entre 48 e 57 mm CP.

The Rio Nhamundá is a poorly-known clearwater river draining the southern Guiana Shield of Brazil. In this study we report the findings of a preliminary ichthyological survey, focusing on catfishes (Siluriformes). We identify a total of 36 species (31 genera, seven families) from the Nhamundá, including 11 species already recorded from the river. Overall, our survey results show that even rapid surveys can provide important information on Amazon fish biodiversity, suggesting potential new species, providing range extensions for nominal species, and additionally highlighting taxa in need of taxonomic revision and genetic study. As well as the traditional forms of data collected on biodiversity surveys (i.e. preserved specimen vouchers), our study also provides "new" types of data in the form of DNA barcodes and images of fishes exhibiting colouration in life, information that will be invaluable in future work addressing difficult groups.O Rio Nhamundá é um rio de água clara, pouco conhecido, que drena parte do Escudo das Guianas em território brasileiro. Nesse estudo, nós reportamos os resultados de um levantamento ictiofaunístico preliminar dessa área, tendo como foco os bagres (Siluriformes). Nós identificamos um total de 36 espécies (31 gêneros, sete famílias) provenientes de nossa coleta, e adicionamos 11 espécies já conhecidas para o rio. De maneira geral, os resultados de nossa pesquisa mostram que mesmo levantamentos rápidos podem gerar informações importantes sobre a biodiversidade de peixes amazônicos, sugerindo potenciais espécies novas, ampliando a área de distribuição de espécies, além de apontar a necessidade de revisões taxonômicas e estudos genéticos para alguns taxa. Para além das formas tradicionais de dados coletados em pesquisas de biodiversidade (i.e. espécimes preservados), nosso estudo fornece "novas" formas de dados, como DNA barcodes e imagens com o padrão de coloração dos espécimes vivos, informações essas que serão de valor inestimável para futuros estudos que abordem grupos taxonômicos difíceis.

Previously proposed synapomorphies for the genus Gelanoglanis of the catfish family Auchenipteridae are evaluated and four additional features involving the relationship between the mesethmoid and premaxilla, the very fleshy anterior portion of the snout, the lack of ossification of the second through fourth infraorbitals, and the incomplete poring of the lateral line are hypothesized as synapomorphic for the members of the genus. A new species of Gelanoglanis is described based on a series of specimens collected in the rio Teles Pires, a tributary of the rio Tapajós in the southern reaches of the Amazon basin. The new species demonstrates a number of features unusual within Gelanoglanis including a fontanel bordered by the frontals, a particularly elongate gonopodium in mature males, reductions in the dentition on the premaxilla, and a shorter posterior extension of the maxilla inside the maxillary barbel. The new species is a miniature as evidenced both by its body size and the reductions of various ossifications of the head, the number of fin rays and of the laterosensory canal system on the head and body.Sinapomorfias propostas previamente para o gênero Gelanoglanis da família Auchenipteridae são avaliadas e quatro características adicionais que envolvem a relação entre o mesetmóide e a pré-maxila, a porção anterior do focinho carnosa, a perda de ossificação do segundo ao quarto infraorbital e linha lateral incompleta são hipotetizadas como sinapomórficas para os membros do gênero. Uma espécie nova de Gelanoglanis é descrita com base em uma série de exemplares coletados no rio Teles Pires, um tributário do rio Tapajós na porção sul da bacia Amazônica. A espécie nova possui várias características incomuns dentro de Gelanoglanis, incluindo uma fontanela bordeada pelos frontais, um gonopódio particularmente longo em machos maduros, redução da dentição na premaxila, e extensão posterior da maxila mais curta dentro do barbilhão maxilar. A espécie nova é uma miniatura, como evidenciado não apenas pelo tamanho reduzido do corpo, como também pela redução da ossificação da cabeça, do número de raios e do sistema de canais látero-sensoriais da cabeça e do tronco.
