“…People in advanced stage of disease or out of therapeutic possibilities, tend to lose the function of some anatomical structures, as for the size and location of the tumor, as well as the specific type of treatment held Changes in swallowing, chewing and sucking are commonly reported in literature 28 and were ratified in this study, with the need to perform additional procedures that re-establish these activities, but the use of some devices ends up leading to implications in communication. Calheiros and Albuquerque highlight the importance of observing which structures the tumor has already affected, as well as the presence of devices such as feeding or tracheostomy tube, by checking the degree of commitment of feeding and communication functions 7 .…”

Certain issues may be at the heart of the current scenario, such as the historically low inclusion of SLH care in the public policies constructed by the Brazilian State, the hegemony of professional operations in individual clinics, primarily in the private sector, and the late inclusion of public health contents and experiences in the professional training curriculum, with even less integration within teaching services (4,24,25) .…”

“…Data referring to 2010, demonstrates that the number of SLH procedures per 1,000 inhabitants in the SUS Northeast region (4.31) was lower than the national average (6.07) (12) . Within this context, we also note the lack of indicators to estimate the workforce required to meet SLH health needs.…”

“…In Brazil, the Health Informatics Department of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) at the Ministry of Health made available a range of databases with direct and indirect applicability for information production in the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. These include the Outpatient Information System (SIA-SUS) and the National Registry of Health Facilities (CNES), which, alongside demographic data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), were used to analyse the evolution of speech, language and hearing care in SUS between 2000 and 2010 9 . Another example refers to the estimated coverage of newborn hearing screening for SUS users in Brazil 10 , which used data from the Live Births Information System (SINASC), the SIA-SUS, the Interagency Health Information Network (RIPSA) and the Beneficiary Information System (SIB) of the National Agency of Supplementary Health (ANS).…”
