Incidental findings in patients evaluated with cone beam computed tomography for orthodontic treatment

Abstract: ObjectiveThe aim of this retrospective study was to determine and quantify incidental findings in CBCT scans taken exclusively for orthodontic purposes. Methods A total of 202 scans were evaluated by two examiners and classified into five different groups. Results A total of 227 incidental findings were found in a sample of patients aged 5-58 years old. The highest number of findings was of dental origin (n = 157), followed by airway (N = 46), skull (N = 16) and ATM (n = 8). Scans with no incidental finding ac… Show more

“…This difference in prevalence may be explained by the clinical features of the disease. Pseudocysts usually regress spontaneously, may not show significant changes in size over the long term [19], and rarely lead to symptoms. Owing to these characteristics, conservative monitoring is suggested in the absence of complications associated with pseudocysts [7].…”

“…Maxillary sinus pathologies are frequently encountered by dentists during the radiographic assessment of patients with teethrelated complaints. Also, maxillary sinus pathologies are observed as incidental radiographic findings in asymptomatic patients who are evaluated for implant assessment, endodontic therapy, impacted/ supernumerary teeth and orthodontic correction [1]. A variety of imaging modalities including plain films as well as advanced radiographs provide visualization of maxillary sinus.…”
