Photoinactivation of Candida albicans using methylene blue as photosensitizer

Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate the effect of photodynamic therapy in the inactivation of Candida albicans planktonic cells, using methylene blue, 150 mg/mL, as a photosensitizer. Methods Aliquots of 100 (μg/mL of the fungal suspension in a 10 Results At the concentration of 150 μg/mL, and time of 5 min incubation, the reduction was significant (p˂0.05). In the absence of irradiation, methylene blue produced no reduction in CFU/mL. Conclusion Photodynamic Therapy presented antifungal effect against Candida albicans and … Show more

“…Actually, the PDT with a photosensitizer to eliminate microorganisms is a very interesting option for some authors [17,20,[32][33][34][35][36]. The use of photodynamic therapy (LLLT treatment in the presence of methylene blue photosensitizer) to inhibit the antifungal activity of C. albicans, according to the results obtained in this study, with a value of 100% microbial inhibition (CFU/ ml ± SD = 0.0 ± 0.0), is presented as a promising therapeutic alternative, which is the basis of our research, and is consistent with that described previously by other authors [11,37,38].…”

“…Studies on this subject are motivated by the evidence that there is great resistance to conventional antimicrobials between pathogenic microorganisms. Thus, the search for therapeutic alternatives, including the application of laser light, is essential for the treatment of these clinical conditions [11,[16][17][18][19][20][21][22].…”

“…Our results are justified according to Carvalho, et al Which indicate that the greater absorption of light emitted by the laser of lowlevel in the blue of methylene occurs in wavelengths larger than 600nm [26]. Thus, we believe that our results occurred because the exposure of a photo sensitizer to the light emitted by a low-level laser causes chemical reactions capable of causing the destruction of proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and other cellular components, resulting in the destruction of microbial cells [27].…”
