Abstract: Resumen. Show more

“…However, our SI goes beyond these meanings to consider more broadly the many ways in which migrants are sometimes positioned or feel as in‐between, especially in turbulent contexts. Growing and increasingly diverse flows, the politicization and securitization of migration, and the rise of nationalist ideologies, among other global trends, are recasting the figure of the migrant amidst diverse crises increasingly in dichotomist terms either as victims or villains (e.g., Herrera & Sørensen, 2017; Hintjens, 2019; Padilla & Goldberg, 2017). We argue that by being in‐between ‘here’ and ‘there’ in turbulent contexts, migrants occupy not simply a physical but also a symbolic intermediate position, thereby becoming a pivotal (and often instrumental) element within multiple crises.…”

“…Upon completion of the program, participants continue to enjoy Subsidiary Protection or Refugee Status and associated rights for 3 and 5 years, respectively and are expected to be integrated into the labour market and society and to live as independently as possible. If people continue to need support at the end of the reception program, they will be followed up by the Instituto de Solidariedade e Segurança Social and the ACM (ACM, 2017; Padilla & Goldberg, 2017).…”
