Computational thinking as a heuristic endeavour: students’ solutions of coding problems

Abstract: In this paper we investigate students’ computational thinking in mathematics education. Specifically, through the analysis of teaching experiments conducted as qualitative case studies, we explore aspects of constructionism and problem solving. In different learning scenarios, pairs of elementary school and undergraduate students explored coding puzzles in order to complete a posed computational-mathematical task. From a constructionist point of view, the results indicate that the learning experience involved … Show more

“…For the CT components regarding research and scientific inquiry including Vocabulary and terminology, Data collection and Communication , teacher-directed efforts are expected to facilitate students’ practice of such CT components. It is also interesting to note that heuristics, an experience-based strategy that facilitates problem-solving such as “trial and error” (Scucuglia et al , 2020), was most commonly observed in students’ independent work during their problem-solving. This finding indicates that students applied heuristics more than any other CT skills when they were willingly trying to solve the problem on their own knowing teacher’s help was readily available.…”
