The effects of functional training and stationary cycling on respiratory function of elderly with Parkinson disease: a pilot study

Abstract: Introduction: Respiratory function changes in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) contribute to aspiration pneumonia, the main cause of mortality in PD population. Objective: To compare the effects of functional training and cycle exercise in respiratory function of elderly with PD. Methods: Twenty participants were randomised into two groups. Experimental group (EG) (n = 10) performed cycle exercise and control group (CG) (n = 10) was trained with functional training. A blinded researcher evaluated maxim… Show more

“…In total, studies included 371 participants with PD, 210 were male and 161 were female. Each study used the Hoehn and Yahr classification to measure disease severity, reporting number of participants in each stage ( n = 230) [43–47,61–63 or providing an average score ( n = 141) [1,42,64,65. The minimum number of participants with PD in any study was 13 [43 and maximum was 75 [62.…”

“…Table 2 summarises the risk of bias in included studies, with six RCTs identified at low risk [1,42,47,61,64,65 and three identified at high risk of bias [44,47,63. The three nonrandomised control trials were rated as having moderate quality [43,45,62.…”

“…A doença de Parkinson (DP) é considerada uma enfermidade neurodegenerativa que se caracteriza como um distúrbio dos neurônios dopaminérgicos da substância negra do mesencéfalo 1,2 . Dentro do seu quadro sintomático, destacam-se as alterações posturais, temores, rigidez e bradicinesia 3 . Apesar das repercussões motoras serem as mais evidentes, o sistema respiratório também é alvo da DP, desde o seu início.…”
