Objective amidst the greatest health crisis in history triggered by COVID-19, this documental study was intended to understand the meanings individuals who have lost loved ones in this context assign to the phenomenon of suppressed funeral rituals. Method based on the theory of grief, the corpus of this study was composed of documents published in digital media containing personal writings and reports of experiences freely and easily available to the public. Two researchers with expertise in the field used inductive thematic analysis to interpret data. Results the experiences shared in the reports reflect the suffering experienced by the sudden death of a significant person, which is amplified by the absence or impediment to performing familial farewell rituals. The suppression or abbreviation of funeral rituals is a traumatic experience because family members are prevented from fulfilling their last homage to the loved one who has suddenly passed away, causing feelings of disbelief and indignation. Conclusion alternatives and new ways to celebrate passage rituals in emergencies of strong social commotion such as a pandemic are needed to provide support and comfort to family members, friends, and relatives. These rituals help survivors to overcome the critical moment, decreasing the risk of developing complicated grief.

Objective: to describe the evolution of indicators and capacity for health care in the initial phase of the COVID-19 epidemic in the Northeast region of Brazil. Methods: this was a descriptive study based on COVID-19 case epidemiological bulletins released by the Ministry of Health up until April 1 st , 2020. The incidence rate, lethality and number of cumulative daily cases were calculated. Results: 1,005 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were identified, most of them in Ceará and Bahia states. The incidence rate was 1.8/100,000 inhabitants and lethality was 2.7%. Ceará was the state with the highest number of cases, with 29.6 new cases per day on average. Average intensive care bed availability in the Northeast region (1.04/10,000 inhab.) was below the national average (2.8/10,000 inhab.). Conclusion: the indicators suggest that COVID-19 impact is heterogeneous and signal the challenges for health systems in the Northeast Region.

Public Health aims to achieve as much understanding as possible of the phenomenon of human life related to the health-disease process and to obtain the highest attainable standards of health and well-being of the population. This field of knowledge contributes to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, with epidemiology as the highlight. Objective: to promote a reflection on health and the current pandemic with the proposal of the present and future construction of a more integrative and cooperative global health, with health services accessible to the populations. Method: literature review based on research carried out on books and database of scientific publications (VHL and Scielo). Results: scientific texts considered relevant for the discussion were included in this review, with the themes of Public Health and COVID-19. Discussion: the discussion was organized into four categories, namely: COVID-19 epidemiological challenges for health; measures to contain the pandemic; the impact of the pandemic on mental health; the social and economic impact of the pandemic. Conclusion: there are still many challenges for collaborative global health among different countries in the world.
