“…Because of prejudice and the fear of being disclosed, many patients with gender dysphoria do not seek medical care but often resort to self-medication to affirm the sex with which they self-identify (Asscheman, Gooren & Eklund, 1989). It is known that most transgender women and transvestite self-medicate due to lack of access to health services (Kruger et al, 2019). Most arrive at the health service taking a large dosage of birth control pills or medications for hormonal stabilization, believing that this way will accelerate the modification of your body characteristics (Amaral et al, 2017).…”

It is also important to consider the potential sampling bias in the study, as convenience sampling was used in order to obtain the desired sample size.…”

“…Further, prejudice and discrimination have remained rooted in the culture of health professionals, leading transgender patients to avoid engaging with the healthcare system due to the fear of disrespect and identity delegitimisation. 25 Despite the existence of evidence-based HIV prevention strategies, including PrEP and long-acting injectables, within the Brazilian healthcare system, the transgender population has historically benefited less from these initiatives in comparison to other high-risk groups, such as men who have sex with men. 26 27 As a 'hidden population', the transgender community is often stigmatised, criminalised, difficult to reach and consequently left out of research initiatives and HIV-related programming.…”
