Simulation of an Injection Process Using a CAE Tool: Assessment of Operational Conditions and Mold Design on the Process Efficiency

Abstract: The present work developed an experimental and simulation study to evaluate the influence of some operational conditions and mold design on the efficiency of an injection process used to produce polystyrene parts. The software SolidWorks Plastic was used to simulate the injection process and assess the performance of the mold considering the absence and the presence of venting. Experimental results obtained by varying the injection pressure, injection temperature as well as the mold temperature were used to va… Show more

“…The interactions between these factors result in the difficulty to achieve a uniform distribution by simply changing the process condition parameters. Therefore, applying CAE simulation is a reliable way to quickly identify and fix potential problems before manufacturing 45,46 . In this study, a hexagonal plant‐pot mold was designed and injection molding parameters suitable for PLA material were optimized by Moldex3D CAE simulation (Figure S2).…”

“…It is carried out in injection molding machines and with such auxiliary devices as production thermostats, plastic dryers, grinders for grinding plastics, etc. Many papers studied primary molding conditions, from design creation to product manufacturing [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. The injection process is influenced by various factors: properties of the material, wear of the mold, temperature fluctuations, parameters of the process [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…To address this challenge, a method for the design of reconfigurable moulds with the integration of Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) and Design for Assembly (DfA) techniques is here introduced. CAE became a reliable technique in the last decades [5][6][7]. In industry, the IM simulation is mainly limited to cavity filling verification and design validation.…”
