Abstract: The channel of the Valo Grande (VG) in the Ribeira de Iguape River (São Paulo State, Brazil), inaugurated in 1852, is one of the largest environmental disasters in the Brazilian coast. This article presents a synthesis of the historical, ecological, geographic and sociopolitical dimensions involving the VG. The VG has promoted the ecosystem disrupting and the landscape reconfiguration of Cananéia-Iguape estuary-lagoon complex. Studies have also indicated that part of these environmental changes could be revers… Show more

“…En especial para mitigar la ambigüedad en problemas de la desigual distribución del poder en el territorio a lo largo del tiempo (Bocco, 2019). Pero también para que contribuyan a la reflexión sobre la problemática de la modificación antrópica de ecosistemas naturales y la adopción de métodos y modelos de desarrollo inadecuados que crean escenarios de riesgo (Prado et al, 2019).…”

“…However, individuals of C. spixii are also found in the northern area of this estuary (Mishima and Tanji, 1981). In this region, the salinity is smaller, ranging between 10 and 30 (Barcellos et al, 2005;Pecoraro et al, 2018) and is notorious for its major continental and anthropic influences, mainly by the Ribeira de Iguape fluvial inputs (Prado et al, 2019). The aim of this work was to examine the existence of abnormal age rings in Cathorops spixii otoliths from the Cananeia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon Complex (CIELC) and report it.…”

“…Obtaining knowledge on the ecology of these species is crucial since fishing pressure and habitat degradation on coastal and inner shelf regions have disturbed the ichthyofauna, resulting in population depletion, diversity loss, and ecosystem unbalancing (Imoto et al, 2016;Dias et al, 2017;Prado et al, 2019;Rolim et al, 2019;Trevizani et al, 2019). Thus, the present study aimed to assess the functionality and effectiveness of the two MPAs to assist the decision making process that involves the conservation of demersal elasmobranchs.…”
