Review of the distribution of Lophostoma carrikeri (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae), with range extension to transitional vegetation zones in the southwestern Amazon

Abstract: ABSTRACT Lophostoma carrikeri has been mostly recorded within the Amazon biome. There are scarce records in the northern Brazilian Amazon, but also records outside this biome, which were neglected in literature. The aim of this study was to update and extend the distribution of L. carrikeri. Seven new localities in Brazil were provided, including the first records for the states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso, filling a large gap in the species distribution, and three additional records for the state of P… Show more

“…The new records presented here increase to eleven the number of Brazilian states where the species is currently known: Amazonas, Amapá, Roraima, Rondônia, Pará, Tocantins, Piauí, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Ceará and Minas Gerais (Vizotto et al 1980, Gribel & Taddei 1989, Sampaio et al 2003, Gregorin et al 2008, Zortéa et al 2009, Gregorin et al 2011, Silva et al 2013, Brandão et al 2020) (Figure 2). In addition, it is possible that L. carrikeri may also occur the state of Acre, since it was collected in Rio Curanja, Peru, near the border of this Brazilian state (Fonseca & Pinto 2004).…”

“…In Brazil, most records of L. carrikeri are within the Amazon biome, but in the last decade it was recorded for the first time in the Cerrado and reported in the Caatinga after 28 years since it was previously collected in this biome (Vizotto et al 1980, Gregorin et al 2008, Zortéa et al 2009, Gregorin et al 2011. Recently, Brandão et al (2020) have also recorded L. carrikeri for transitional areas between Cerrado and southwestern Amazon in the state of Mato Grosso, but records outside the Amazon are still scarce.…”

“…This species can be distinguished from other members of the genus by the following combination of features: pale to whitish fur on the throat; lack of postauricular patches; proximal one-third of the dorsal surface of forearm sparsely covered by short hairs; deeper basisphenoid pits with septum conspicuously narrower; and presence of a weak indentation on the lingual cingulum of each upper canine (Velazco and Gardner, 2012). Descriptions and measurements of L. carrikeri were provided by Allen (1910), Goodwin (1942), Swanepoel and Genoways (1979), Genoways and Williams (1980), Williams and Genoways (1980a), McCarthy et al (1983), Gribel and Taddei (1989), McCarthy et al (1992), Simmons and Voss (1998), Lim et al (1999), Lim et al (2005), Zortea et al (2009), Velazco and Cadenillas (2011), Velazco and Gardner (2012), Camacho et al (2014Camacho et al ( , 2016, and Brandao et al (2020). No subspecies are currently recognized (Camacho et al, 2016).…”

“…New records and specimens of volant and non-volant small mammals (e.g. Semedo et al 2013Semedo et al , 2022Brandão et al 2015Brandão et al , 2016Brandão et al , 2019Brandão et al , 2020Barbosa et al 2016) have been accumulating in recent decades, including specimens of Akodon and Thalpomys (Santos-Filho et al 2008;Brandão et al 2019;Carmignotto et al 2022). These published recent records, along with ancient records (Pine et al 1970;Myers 1989;Hershkovitz 1990) and newly collected specimens (unpublished data) housed at the MZUSP collection (Figure 2), add up to 37 localities and prompted the present doctorate thesis to investigate the diversity within samples of western Brazil.…”
