Range extension of Centronycetris maximiliani (Mammalia: Chiroptera) for southern Amazonia

Abstract: Bat species of the genus Centronycteris are some of the rarest Neotropical Emballonuridae and fewer than 50 specimens have been deposited in scientific collections. The aim of this study is to extend the distribution of Centronycteris maximiliani. Three C. maximiliani specimens were recorded in the Brazilian Amazonia, providing the first record of the species for the state of Rondônia, the southernmost record of the species for the Amazon biome in Brazil, and an additional record for the state of Pará. “…Therefore, the recorded sonotype of C. maximiliani is important, not only because it is the first acoustic record of this species for Pernambuco, but also because it confirms that this poorly known species remains present in the reserve after 37 years. Although widespread across South America, C. maximiliani is rarely captured with net sampling; currently there are only 14 records of captures in Brazil, but only three of Hintze et al | The Emballonuridae of Saltinho Reserve by echolocation those records were not in the Amazonian biome (Rocha et al 2015).…”

“…During this period, more than 500 specimens of 36 species of small nonvolant mammals (rodents and marsupials) were collected and deposited at the MZUSP; there were some important new records, as the first record of one specimen of Rhagomys longilingua to Brazil (Percequillo et al, 2017;but see Percequillo et al, 2011). Regarding the volant small mammals (bats), 630 specimens of 66 species, impressive numbers, with new records for the state of Rondônia (Brandão et al, 2016;Rocha et al, 2013;Rocha et al, 2015). Considering the arachnids, more than 21,000 lots were collected, with an impressive number of 245 species.…”

“…The new records from Mato Grosso and Rondônia lie in an area where several new records of bat species have been recently reported (e.g. Rocha et al 2015;Brandão et al 2016;Dalponte et al 2016;Pedroso et al 2018). Western Brazil is a highly diverse area, not only for bats but for other mammals as well (Brandão et al 2019), where field-survey efforts should be increased and fauna conservation deserves higher attention.…”
