Abstract: Centipedes are opportunistic carnivore predators, and large species can feed on a wide variety of vertebrates, including bats. The aim of this study was to report the third record of bat predation by centipedes worldwide, the first record in the Amazon region, while covering aspects of foraging, capture and handling of prey. We observed the occurence in a fortuitous encounter at Cristalino State Park, located in the Amazon region of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The attack took place in a small wooden stru… Show more

“…The same variation is observed for Southern Amazon, which has also had its biological diversity recently investigated , Noronha et al 2015, Batistella et al 2015. The Myriapoda fauna in the Pantanal of Poconé and Southern Amazon can be considered similar in terms of assemblage structure, given the size of its individuals, species richness, and proportion of new records, besides the short period of studies and sampling carried out in the region.…”

“…All centipede species are carnivorous, venomous, and normally feed on invertebrates, but larger specimens of Scolopendra spp. can also predate small vertebrates such as mice and snakes (McCormick and Polis 1982), lizards (Moura et al 2015), and bats (Molinari et al 2005;SrbekAraujo et al 2012;Noronha et al 2015). Several snakes feed on potentially dangerous prey or oversized prey (Sazima and Martins 1990;Šukalo et al 2013;Arsovski et al 2014).…”
