This article investigates the folk taxonomy of four artisanal fisheries communities in Ilhabela/SP. The local folk taxonomy shows how these fishermen identify, name and classify fish resources in the environment exploited by them. Forty-two fishermen from four different local communities of Ilhabela were interviewed through a structured questionnaire and photographs of fish species with occurrence for the southeast region of Brazil. Respondents identified the 24 species listed as 50 generic names and 27 binominal specific names, mainly related to aspects of fish species morphology such as color, shape and size. These fish were classified into eight groups according to local criteria related to the morphology, ecology and fishing forms associated with the capture of species. The morphological aspect was identified as the most used feature by respondents to name and classify local fish, followed by ecological aspects such as behavior, diet and habitat. The comparison of local criteria used for the groups was similar to the scientific taxonomy criteria, showing a detailed local ecological knowledge by this group of fishers. Resumo: Este artigo investiga a etnotaxonomia de quatro comunidades de pescadores artesanais de Ilhabela/SP. A etnotaxonomia mostra como esses pescadores, identificam, nomeam e classificam os recursos pesqueiros no ambiente explorado por eles. Quarenta e dois pescadores de quatro diferentes comunidades locais de Ilhabela foram entrevistados através de um questionário estruturado e fotografias de espécies de peixes de ocorrência para a região sudeste do Brasil. Os entrevistados identificaram as 24 espécies listadas através de 50 nomes genéricos e 27 nomes específicos binomiais, principalmente relacionados com aspectos morfológicos como forma, cor e tamanho. Estes peixes foram classificados em oito grupos de acordo com critérios locais relacionados com a morfologia, ecologia e técnicas de pesca associados à captura de tais espécies. O aspecto morfológico foi identificado como o fator mais utilizado pelos entrevistados para nomear e classificar as espécies de peixes, seguidos por critérios relacionados à ecologia das espécies tais como, dieta, comportamento e habitat. A comparação dos critérios locais utilizados para os grupos foi semelhante aos critérios científicos de taxonomia, mostrando um detalhado conhecimento ecológico local deste grupo de pescadores. This article concerns an inventory of the ichthyofauna from the main channel of the mid-Tocantins River and studies on fisheries in this region including an evaluation of activities from Colônia de Pesca Z-35 of Estreito and Carolina in Tocantins and Maranhão States, Brazil, during 1999 and 2000. This study includes taxonomy and fishery data obtained from field collections and from interviews with the fishermen, carried out in March and July of 2001. The systematic record and fishery data were obtained from the most common species of the ichthyofauna of the mid-Tocantins River. A critical examination of fish resources from this area allows us to conclude that the large commercial species have decreased in number and are qualitatively reduced in that area of Tocantins. This fact may be a result of breaking the main channel of Tocantins, first by the hydroelectric power dam of Tucurui, twenty years ago, followed by the formation of the hydroelectric reservoirs of Lageado, Peixe Angical and Serra da Mesa, that transformed the main channel of Tocantins into a successive cascade of reservoirs. Those events may perhaps modify the profile of the fish community in that area. The obtained data also permit an examination of fisheries in the area, providing an appraisal on forthcoming problems that will be faced by fishermen of Colônia de Pesca Z-35.Keywords: neotropical, freshwater fishes, fishery and fishermen, Tocantins, Maranhão, Brazil. Ictiofauna, recursos pesqueiros e a atividade da pesca no médio Rio Tocantins no Estado do Maranhão, Brasil ResumoEste artigo versa sobre a ictiofauna e avalia o estado da atividade pesqueira nos municípios de Estreito e Carolina no médio rio Tocantins, na divisa dos estados do Maranhão e Tocantins. O artigo reúne estudos taxonômicos e apresenta dados da ictiofauna relatando sobre a atividade de pescadores nos meses de março e julho de 2001. Estes dados são complementados por uma discussão sobre dados pesqueiros obtidos junto à Colônia de Pesca Z-35 de Estreito em 1999 e 2000. O estudo da ictiofauna e dos recursos pesqueiros levantados permitiram um exame sobre as reduções e supressões de espécies comerciais ocorridas no elenco da ictiofauna do médio rio Tocantins. O estudo ainda conclui que esta redução qualitativa na ictiofauna desta área pode ser primeiramente atribuída ao fechamento da barragem da hidrelétrica de Tucurui há cerca de vinte anos e secundariamente à formação dos reservatórios das hidrelétricas, Lageado, Peixe Angical e Serra da Mesa, que transformaram a calha do Tocantins em uma cascata de reservatórios causando modificações na ictiofauna. Abstract:In the Amazon fishing is one of the main economic activities and higher value to traditional riverine communities of the region. Considering this importance is to suppose that the riverine populations have knowledge about fish fauna explores for them, because their forming culture that maintain a strait relationship with natural resources. This study aim to elevate the traditional knowledge of the fishermen from the riverine communities in the Big Lake Complex about the fish alimentary diet caught for commercialization and consumption. This study was realized in the Manacapuru Big Lake Complex through interview jointed with 62 fishermen. The results presents a detailed knowledge about the tambaqui, tucunaré, pacu, acará-açú, curimatã, aruanã, matrinxã, piranha and pirapitinga fish feeding compatible with the laboratory analyzes and with the specifics literature. Finally the traditional ecological knowledge from the fishermen about the fish ecology in the Big Lake must be used as a subsidy study of lakes management, establishing in this way, an information resource for scientific works at the same time to minimize the cost with a long research. Resumo:No Amazonas a pesca é uma das principais atividades econômicas e de maior valor tradicional para as comunidades ribeirinhas da região. Estas têm conhecimentos sobre a bioecologia dos peixes que exploram, pois praticam a atividade pesqueira diariamente, o que torna esse conhecimento fortalecido ao longo das gerações. O estudo tem por objetivo verificar se o conhecimento tradicional dos pescadores ribeirinhos, sobre a dieta alimentar de tambaqui, tucunaré, pacu, acará-açú, curimatã, aruanã, matrinxã, piranha e pirapitinga, é similar com aquele levantado em laboratório. Para tal, foram realizados em comunidades dos lagos Jaitêua e São Lourenço no complexo Lago Grande de Manacapuru, no período agosto de 2006 a outubro de 2008, questionários sobre os alimentos dos peixes, aplicados a 62 pescadores. O estudo aponta um detalhado conhecimento dos pescadores acerca da alimentação dos 9 tipos de peixes que são similares, no período de cheia, com os resultados obtidos em laboratório e em pesquisas literárias durante esta investigação. O estudo conclui que o conhecimento dos pescadores do Lago Grande é de fundamental importância para o entendimento da biologia pesqueira e podem ser usados como subsídios para políticas de manejo da pesca em lagos de várzeas quando agregados ao conhecimento científico.
