Abstract: The thecaboemae fauna of seven central amazonian forest streams — among them the stream of the "Bacia Modelo" — was analised. 129 morphotypes are shortly characterized in a "list of morphotypes" with accompanying figures (Plates 1-7); 39 morphotypes were observed alive and food uptake determined in 20 of these. Their food consists primarily of spores and hyphae of fungi which decompose submerged leaf litter and detritus. Analysis of sequential samples suggests that most species were found in each stream, but t… Show more

“…According to Walker and Lages (1980), a high diversity of morphotypes of thecamoebians is commonly found in Amazon environments, such as the Caeté River Estuary. Accordingly, the investigation of the bottom sediments of streams within the Amazon rainforest revealed the presence of 119 morphotypes (Walker, 1982). However, a lower diversification was found in the studied stations during the sampling event.…”

“…That 6 individuals in 2 samples were unlabelled indicates that 32 P was not equally distributed throughout the leaves . As the fass produced from radioactive leaves contained no 32 P we assume that the radioactivity measured in unspecified detritus was due to specific particles, probably to living cells such as fungus spores or hyphae fragments, and to microfaunal consumers of labelled fungi that grew on the leaves (Thecamoebae, rotifers etc ., Walker, 1985 ;1982) . Table 8 .…”
