Abstract: ABSTRACT:The present work describes the antibacterial activity of the essential oil and the ethanol extract from leaves of Alpinia zerumbet (colônia) on Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from cows with subclinical mastitis and standard strains ATCC 29213 and ATCC 25923, using the agar diffusion method. Ten treatments containing different concentrations of essential oil and ethanol extract (100.0; 50.0; 25.0; 12.5 and 6.3 mg.mL ) and the control group (50% ethyl alcohol and 1% Tween solutions) were used fo… Show more

“…The 2,5-dimethoxy-ρ-cymene constituent, or only ρcymene, is one of the main responsible for the antimicrobial activity already detected in studies with the use of essential oils tested in Staphylococcus aureus, for example. In addition, it is one of the main constituents of the Alpinia zerumbet essential oil (false cardamom) in according with the woks of Castro et al (2016).…”

“…The chemical compositions of the tested essential oil samples are presented in Table 1. The chemical composition of the A. zerumbet essential oil was previously determined by Castro et al (2016). Twenty-three, nineteen and twenty-one components were identified in the essential oils from M. suaveolens, O. gratissimum and A. zerumbet, respectively, representing over 96% of their total compounds.…”

“…Nearly 2 kg of fresh plant was mixed with 3 L of water and boiled for 3 h. A water steam distillation method was used to extract the essential oil from the leaves of A. zerumbet. The essential oils obtained were dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate, filtered, and stored at 4 °C until being tested and analysed at the Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, in Fortaleza, Ceará, by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) for determination of their chemical composition (CASTRO et al, 2016).…”
