“…Regarding dental caries, public policy and community measures for caries prevention and control have focused on fluoridation programs and dental sealant applications [ 78 ]. Effective national programs, at the community level, should tackle the causative (sugars and the dental biofilm), instead of acting only on modulating factors.…”

“…Therefore, preventive strategies should take biological, behavioral, psychosocial, and environmental factors into consideration in order to avoid negatively affecting the oral environment. 14 Oral hygiene measures, dietary counseling, and other non-invasive strategies (such as the application of fluoride and chlorhexidine varnishes and the use of xylitol lozenges) have been shown to be effective in controlling active non-cavitated lesions in children. 15 Some of these strategies will be reviewed in the subsequent section to highlight the need for simultaneous management of the disease and lesion.…”

“…Restorative treatments that focus on filling cavities only without controlling the disease are not beneficial. Individuals should always be motivated and encouraged to improve their oral hygiene and acquire healthy dietary habits 14. d. Restorative treatments allowing maximum preservation of tooth structure should be indicated whenever lesion progression cannot be arrested by non-invasive/micro-invasive interventions,11 such as in the case of active cavitated lesions that cannot be cleaned.…”

“…At the tooth (host) level, the application of fluorides and the use of sealants constituted one of the main strategies to increase the resistance of tooth structures to carious attack. 3 In line with these actions, the current trend in the treatment of carious lesions seeks to preserve tooth structures as much as possible and stimulate repair by activating biological responses from the tooth and surrounding environment, that is, minimally invasive treatments. 4 , 5 In addition, occasionally where an ultraconservative restorative intervention is needed, for example, removal of biofilm is impossible, this should be combined with the use of remineralising agents to enhance the life-span of a restoration, which also reduces the overall cost burden on the patient or public health programmes.…”
