Abstract: This research evaluated the fungistatic and fungicidal activities of red propolis alcoholic extract (RPAE) against different Candida species isolated from chronic periodontitis cases, and compared with chlorhexidine (CHX). Nineteen samples of Candida species (C. albicans [n = 12], C. tropicalis [n = 5] and C. glabrata [n = 2]) isolated from chronic periodontitis cases were analyzed. The fungistatic and fungicidal activity of both RPAE and CHX were evaluated using fluconazole and C. parapsilosis (ATCC 6258) as … Show more

“…The MICs (Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations) of green propolis extract used in the present study against C. albicans , C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis were 2.5μg / mL. Siqueira et al (2015) (14) reported 32-64 μg/mL of MIC for red propolis extract, showing the antifungal potential of green propolis extract against this yeast due to its sensitivity to the natural product in a concentration much lower than that found by these authors.…”

“…The nonadherent patient may have difficulties in maintaining dosage and may suffer from inadequate exposure to antifungal, adverse effects [54], a risk of drug interactions [5557], and microorganism resistance, commonly observed in azole antifungals [10, 11, 58]. Miconazole acts by altering the cell membrane permeability and is considered the antifungal of choice for topical treatment of denture stomatitis in healthy patients.…”

“…[8] Propolis has long been used in folk medicine, as documented in historical sources indicating its use by ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. [6] It has been studied widely for many decades because of its valuable characteristics including its antioxidant, [9][10][11] bacteriostatic, [12 -16] antifungal, [17][18][19] anti-inflammatory, [20][21][22] antiviral, [15,23,24] antitumor and anticancer, [25 -29] properties. The pharmaceutical action of propolis is a result of the bioactive ingredients.…”
