Physical and physiological quality of mangaba seeds obtained by different processing methods

Abstract: HIGHLIGHTS The seeds obtained from the fruit pulp industry have a physiological quality for seedling propagation. There is a high potential for reducing fruit pulp industry residues by using these seeds for propagation. Higher pixel density is observed for full seeds with an efficiency of forming normal seedlings.

“…There was a wide difference in germination between the two lots. The summer lot had an 80% germination rate of freshly harvested seeds, similar to other studies (Barros et al 2011;Oliveira et al 2018;Nunes et al 2021). The summer harvest is the main production period of the species when trees produce more and larger fruits (Silva-Júnior and Lédo;Coradin et al 2018).…”

“…Ripe fruits of H. speciosa, characterized by green to yellow exocarp with red spots of pigmentation (Pereira et al 2016;Coradin et al 2018), were manually processed to obtain seeds within each lot (Nunes et al 2021), collected at natural populations explored by the traditional community 'Catadoras de Mangaba' in the state of Sergipe (Sergipe 2010).…”

“…The seeds were manually processed from ripe fruits (Nunes et al, 2021a), which correspond to yellowish to reddish skin, reddish streaks, and a soft texture. Obtained from a natural population in an area identified in previous studies as genetically diverse and used by the Catadoras de Mangaba community (Nunes et al, 2021b).…”

“…In general, it appears that the effect of saline stress had a greater effect on the GSI than on total germination, which shows that GSI is one of the main parameters that should be evaluated in germination tests. According to Nunes et al (2021), a seed that germinates faster has greater vigor. Lennon et al ( 2021) reinforced these genotypes with rapid germination, using this potential as a strategy to establish themselves in the environment as quickly as possible or when appropriate, taking advantage of environmental conditions favorable to the development of the new individual.…”
