Design of a smart LED lamp to monitor insect populations in an integrated pest management approach

Abstract: This study aimed to present the design and field test results of an LED (light emitting diode) lamp for integrated pest management (IPM) and other entomological studies. The light spectrum of the LEDs was tuned to optimize insect attraction and lower energy consumption. An electronic circuit with control software was integrated with the lamp, enabling it to operate in standalone mode, automatically identify night and day, monitor and control the battery charge with energy from a photovoltaic solar panel, prote… Show more

“…However, it is important to note that fluorescent lamps emit mercury, which can cause environmental pollution ( Li et al., 2018 ). In contrast, LED lamps have been considered safer to operate and have lower energy consumption compared to fluorescent lamps making them an attractive option for controlled environment cultivation ( De Carvalho et al., 2021 ). The effects of different light sources, including fluorescent lamps, LEDs, and high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, on plant growth and development have been extensively studied.…”

“…Chemicals control of lepidopteran defoliators were not used in the plantation since six months before the first trap installation. A 3 L plastic container with a diameter of 12 cm was fixed to the trap bottom and filled with a solution of 200 mL of hydrated ethanol (70%) mixed with 3 mL of household detergent to quickly sacrifice, preserve and reduce the surface tension of the solution and the damage to insects besides reducing their escape (Mafia et al, 2018;Carvalho et al, 2021).…”

“…In most cases, SIL-IoTs nodes are deployed in the wild. Because of the harsh environment, SIL-IoTs nodes are vulnerable to unpredicted faults, such as line open-circuit (OC), circuit board damage, and lure lamp damage [3], [4]. Furthermore, the remote deployment location and large-scale network make SIL-IoT maintenance difficult.…”
