Yield of lettuce grown in hydroponic and aquaponic systems using different substrates

Abstract: This study had as objective to evaluate the effect of the substrate on the yield of lettuce grown in aquaponic and hydroponic systems. The study was conducted at the Federal University of Grande Dourados, located in Dourados, MS. A randomized complete block design was used, with three treatments and 16 replicates. The cultivation systems were analyzed independently. The substrates analyzed were: coconut shell fiber, phenolic foam and expanded vermiculite. The plants were grown in two systems (aquaponic and hyd… Show more

“…Cation exchange capacity improves nutrient uptake of these organic-based materials. In another study, a combination of coconut fiber and crushed stones resulted in higher AP lettuce yield [25]. Thus, the need to explore more on AP crop productivity using different HP system types.…”

“…Generally, aquaculture effluent is usually low in essential crop nutrients required for optimum plant growth, warranting the need for nutrient supplementation. Reports show that nutrient supplementation leads to similar, or even higher, AP crop yield as cHP [24][25][26]. Other factors that influence AP crop yield include crop species [27,28], substrate/grow media type [14,28,29], HP system type, and a myriad of others, which affect nutrient availability and uptake by crops [2,[30][31][32][33].…”

“…Vegetable cultivation in aquaponic system is a very widespread technique in several countries of the world, but in Brazil there are no reports about aquaponic cultivation on a commercial scale. However, studies have been conducted in an attempt to provide information that contributes to the implementation of this cultivation technique (Geisenhoff, Jordan, Santos, Oliveira, & Gomes, 2016;Jordan, Ribeiro, Oliveira, Geisenhoff, & Martins, 2018).…”
