The poor quality of water intended for human consumption is one of the problems that has led to the appearance of several human diseases. The seeds of Moringa oleifera Lam. Can be used as a sustainable and low-cost alternative for water treatment. The aim of this study was to develop alternative methods of treating water for human consumption through the use of Moringa oleifera seeds. Water samples were collected at four points along the Negro River, in the state of Amazonas, for treatment with moringa seeds and simplified filtration systems. The samples were subjected to five types of treatment and compared to untreated samples and drinking water parameters, established by the Ministry of Health. Significant differences were observed in the following physical and chemical parameters of treated and untreated water: color, turbidity, dissolved solids total hardness, total alkalinity, electrical conductivity and ammonia content. The results suggest the possibility that moringa seeds can be used to produce better quality water for human consumption, especially in the case of people living in indigenous communities far from urban areas and without access to any type of water treatment.

O uso de coagulantes de origem natural e orgânico no tratamento de água é uma alternativa ecológica viável na substituição dos coagulantes químicos. Um dos exemplos de coagulante natural é a semente da planta Moringa oleifera, cuja aplicação em pesquisas, testes e análises vem conquistando espaço. O extrato da semente, por conter uma proteína catiônica, age como agente clarificante no tratamento de água. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo evidenciar o uso da Moringa oleifera como coagulante e floculante natural, no tratamento de água, através de um estudo de revisão integrativa. Foi realizado um levantamento bibliográfico nas bases de dados SciElo e Google acadêmico e selecionados 10 (dez) artigos correspondentes ao objetivo do estudo. Com base nos estudos analisados, a literatura confirma que as sementes de Moringa oleifera são eficazes no tratamento de água, com enfoque na redução dos parâmetros físico-químicos (turbidez e cor) e microbiológicos; e sem alteração significativa no pH. Portanto, a aplicação do coagulante natural no tratamento de água é uma alternativa economicamente viável e ambientalmente sustentável.

Moringa oleifera presents important medicinal properties, and its seeds are used to treat water for human consumption and wastewater. The aim of the present study was to analyze the initial growth of M. oleifera seedlings in enriched commercial substrate with differing doses of controlled release fertilizer. The experimental was designed in randomized blocks, with four repetitions of 16 seedlings each. The treatment used doses of controlled release fertilizer, with 0; 2; 4; 6; and 8 kg m -3 of commercial substrate. A hundred days after installing the experiment, the following characteristics were analyzed: height of the aerial part; diameter of the root collar; length; volume; and dry mass of the roots and aerial part. Additionally, the relation between the height of the aerial part and the diameter of the root collar and the Dickson quality index (DQI) were determined. The data was submitted to analysis of variance and to the Shapiro-Wilk test to verify the normality and regression. Controlled release fertilizer at a dose of 5.37 kg m -3 of substrate is recommended for M. oleifera seedling production.
