In light of the current discussion concerning poly families’ rights, this study examined the motivational underpinnings of opposition to poly families. Grounded on the theoretical line that institutional and ideological systems can legitimize the ostracism of stigmatized groups, the current exploratory research project examined the relationship between religiosity and opposition to poly families and whether this relationship is mediated by political positioning and mononormativity in a serial fashion. Specifically, Study 1 ( N = 277) examined the effect of religiosity on opposition towards polyamorous parents and whether the endorsement of conservative ideology and mononormativity would mediate this relationship. Study 2 ( N = 193) replicated the first study’s findings using a behavioural expression of negative stigma towards poly families’ rights. Study 1 showed that opposition towards poly families might be affected by religiosity and that the impact of religiosity is mediated by conservative ideology and mononormativity. Study 2 showed that religiosity could affect opposition to poly families’ rights through conservative ideology and mononormativity. This study provides evidence that the more religious participants are likely to express attitudinal and behavioural opposition towards poly families and that the more religious participants endorsed ideas based on conservative and mononormativity principles, the more they opposed poly families. The current exploratory study shows the relation between system-justifying ideological manifestations in prejudice towards poly families.

O amor e os relacionamentos amorosos se constituem atualmente com fenômenos de intenso interesse e problematização para a ciência psicológica, perpassando desde a esfera clínica até as práticas em pesquisa no campo da atração interpessoal. O objetivo desde estudo foi identificar o estado da arte das produções brasileiras no campo da psicologia do amor e relacionamentos amorosos, nos períodos entre 2013 a 2020. Metodologicamente, foram consultadas as bases de dados ScIELO, LILACS e PePSIC, por meio dos descritores "relacionamentos amorosos" ou "amor". A partir dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão, foram analisados na íntegra 94 produções, 29 teóricos e 65 empíricos. Observou-se uma pluralidade multimetodológica e temática, juntamente com diferentes estratégias de coleta de análise de dados, fortalecendo resultados de pesquisas com características similares, com metodologias diferentes. Atualizando revisões anteriores, os resultados sustentam que o tema está em franco desenvolvimento no país, com dados cada vez mais robustos, fortalecendo a área da pesquisa no cenário brasileiro.

Defining Polyamory: A Thematic Analysis of Lay People’s Definitions

This study aims at analyzing lay definitions of polyamory and to compare definitions presented by people in a monogamous relationship (MR) and on a consensual non-monogamous relationship (CNMR), and heterosexual people and non-heterosexual people.This exploratory qualitative study used data collected from a web survey with a convenience sample, where people answered the question "What does polyamory mean?". We conducted a thematic analysis in order to find patterns of meaning and used demographic data collected to compare themes between groups.The final sample comprised 463 participants, aged from 18 to 66 years (M= 32.19, SD = 10.01), mostly women (61%) and heterosexual (60,5%). Most respondents were in a monogamous relationship (54.2%), followed by no relationship (21%), and a nonmonogamous relationship (13.2%). Analysis shows people have a wide variety of definitions of polyamory, and that most people in our sample had a relative understanding of the term. People in CNMR valued positive feelings, and expressed themes of commitment, informed consent and cohabitation, while these themes were less present monogamous people's responses. The findings relation to stigma and dehumanization is discussed.
