Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, voluntary bone marrow donors registry analysis

Abstract: Objective: this study aimed to report the allele and haplotype frequencies of volunteer bone marrow donors (VBMD) from the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) who were enrolled in the Brazilian Volunteer Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDOME). Methods: the sample comprised 12,973 VBMD who had their allele and haplotype frequencies calculated by Arlequin 3.5.1.2. A multivariate analysis of the data was obtained through a principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) performed with SPSS 8… Show more

“…12 Only a related donor will be a total match, ideally a sibling with identical HLA status. 13,14 As such donors are not always available, whenever a transplant is needed, a search for unrelated matching donors is conducted.…”

“…These findings are consistent with Monte et al findings, where HLA‐A, ‐B, ‐DRB1 and ‐DQB1 were analyzed in 97 individuals from the city of Teresina, the capital city of Piauí. In the state of Rio Grande do Norte a study characterized nearly 13 000 voluntary bone marrow donors for low‐resolution HLA‐A, ‐B and ‐DRB1 . The authors conclude that, despite admixture, the HLA profile of the bone marrow donor population in Rio Grande do Norte is closer to European and Euro‐descent populations.…”

“…The authors conclude that, despite admixture, the HLA profile of the bone marrow donor population in Rio Grande do Norte is closer to European and Euro‐descent populations. However, the authors point out that less populous cities are under‐represented in the database, which may not accurately portray the genetic variation of the HLA in this state as a whole …”
